Dear colleagues,
Anxiety is referred by most patients as the worst aspect of the peri-operative period, and might both increase postoperative pain and decrease patient satisfaction. Formal anxiety evaluation is not part of standard pre-anaesthetic assessments, but many anaesthesiologists routinely prescribe anxiolytic premedication. Benzodiazepines have been widely used in the past but novel strategies may now replace Midazolam as the prime choice. Local practices seem to vary, however current data about this practice in Europe is unknown.
Our main objective is to clarify the actual standard of care concerning anxiolytic and sedative premedication in Europe. From here, issues about patient safety and European recommendations might arise.
